NCShare’s leadership team met with colleagues at the University of North Carolina Wilmington on Oct. 16, 2025, to discuss training needs, infrastructure enhancements, and collaboration across the UNC System.
Site visits allow NCShare’s team to gather feedback from campus leaders and share how they can access computational research resources through the partnership.
“I was impressed with the ‘team’ attitude that the NCShare site visit projected,” said Kenneth Halanych, executive director of the Center for Marine Science at UNC Wilmington. “There was definitely a sense of ‘we are all in this together’ in terms of figuring out how to stay at the leading edge of computational opportunities.”
During the visit, which included a campus tour led by university staff, NCShare’s team highlighted opportunities for cross-training and programmatic development.
“As the needs for computational infrastructure to address leading research questions continue to grow, it is helpful to know that UNC Wilmington can draw on, and provide, support to other researchers within North Carolina,” said Halanych.
Sharyne Miller, associate vice chancellor and chief information officer at UNC Wilmington, said NCShare’s team took time to understand the university’s needs and affirmed its commitment to supporting research growth on campus.
“We learned that NCShare offers invaluable resources that can significantly enhance campus research capacity,” said Miller. “To fully leverage these opportunities, we must remain engaged and connected, both to utilize existing services and to contribute ideas that help identify gaps and shape future offerings.”
Since the visit, NCShare’s collaboration with UNC Wilmington has already helped break down technological barriers and expand research opportunities at the university.
“We recently conducted a high-performance computing (HPC) strategy session with faculty across campus, and it was encouraging to hear faculty already referencing and valuing the services NCShare provides,” said Miller. “Additionally, we discussed opportunities for NCShare to help ITS mature in identifying and pursuing grant opportunities in partnership with research stakeholders. I am looking forward to advancing that work and deepening collaboration.”
Halanych and Miller encouraged other universities across the state to take advantage of NCShare’s shared resources.
“The more we collaborate and build together, the stronger the collective impact will be,” said Miller.
